This is the brocade section in sumak technique of the back of a Luri-Bakhtiary bag. It represents an artefact of great collectible interest as it highlights one of the oldest iconography conceived in the mountainous territory of the Zagros. It should be noted, in fact, that the piece is dotted with rare stylistic features widespread, in their simplified version, even in distant territories. Think for example of the simplified animal head columns found in Anatolian artefacts, in the Caucasus or in Western Turkestan. In this case, on the contrary, the oldest version of the two-headed dragon is depicted, still proposed with eyes and horns. It should be mentioned that James Opie, in his work Tribal Rugs, in reiterating the interest of the depiction, identifies precise analogies with bronzes from the Islamic, pre-Islamic and Chinese periods. Unusual, considering the small format, is the multiple presence of animal heads that highlight an endless knot. Rare collector’s item in excellent condition.
